Hot-fix rhinestones have a heat-activated adhesive on the reverse. During pressing, that adhesive must melt, reach the base material and set without damaging the upper. A setting that works on one textile or PU may not give the same result on another, so sample trials are part of responsible development.
The base material matters first
Surface coating, texture, thickness and heat sensitivity all affect bonding. A smooth PU, mesh and woven textile may require different conditions. Some finishes resist adhesive or show pressure marks. Before confirming a stone layout, test the intended material—not a convenient substitute.
Stone and adhesive quality must be consistent
The adhesive layer should be suitable for the selected material and application. Mixed batches, damaged adhesive or poorly stored stones can create uneven results even when press settings are unchanged. Buyers should approve the stone size, colour and quality together with the base material.
Temperature, time and pressure work as a system
Too little heat or time may leave the adhesive only partly activated. Too much can mark, shrink or distort the upper. Pressure must be even enough to bring the stone adhesive into contact with the surface, especially around curves and layered areas. Settings should be recorded after a successful trial so production does not rely on memory.
Placement near edges and folds needs attention
Stones close to a cut edge, stitch line or fold can be exposed to extra movement during assembly. Leave enough clearance for the actual construction, and avoid placing important stones where the upper will be lasted or sharply bent unless the position has been tested on a trial shoe.
Cooling is part of the process
Freshly pressed adhesive may still be soft. Moving or flexing the component too soon can shift stones before the bond has set. The upper should cool in a stable position according to the tested process before handling, trimming or packing.
Test after pressing, not only before delivery
Visual inspection should check alignment, missing stones, glue spread and pressure marks. A gentle manual check can identify obvious loose stones, but any formal adhesion or flex test should suit the material and expected use. It is useful to test again after the upper has been assembled because folding and lasting may stress the decorated area.
