How to Specify Custom PU Sandal Straps Before Sampling

Two PU materials can look similar in a photo but behave differently when cut, folded, stitched or decorated. When we discuss a custom sandal upper, we try to connect the material choice to the actual construction instead of choosing from colour alone.

Start with the intended use

Tell the supplier where the strap sits on the sandal and how it will connect to the sole or another upper component. A narrow decorative strap, a wide vamp and an ankle strap may need different levels of softness and support. A finished-shoe photo is useful because it shows the job the component must do.

Define thickness and hand feel

Thickness affects appearance, flexibility and how cleanly the edges can be finished. “Soft” can also mean different things to different people, so an existing swatch or approved sample is the best reference. If that is not available, describe whether the strap should drape easily, hold its shape or support stones and other decoration.

Choose the surface and backing together

The face material gives the colour, grain and sheen, while the backing influences comfort and stability. Ask whether the reverse will be visible or touch the foot. For some constructions, a separate lining or reinforcement may be needed. This should be discussed before the strap dimensions are finalised because layers add thickness.

Provide a reliable colour reference

A Pantone reference is helpful for direction, but PU stock colours do not always match a paper or screen colour exactly. For close colour matching, send a physical swatch when possible and agree on an acceptable range. Metallic, pearl and glossy surfaces should be reviewed under more than one light source.

Confirm edge and connection details

Specify whether edges are raw, folded, painted or covered by another component. Mark all holes, stitch lines and lasting allowances on the drawing. If a connection end will be hidden in the sole, include the required extra length rather than giving only the visible measurement.

Consider decoration during material selection

Heat-press stones, embroidery and laminated details place different demands on PU. The sample should confirm that the chosen surface tolerates the process without unwanted marks, distortion or poor adhesion. Share the decoration layout at the same time as the base-material request so both can be tested together.
